The Pileated Woodpecker
Shot with a Canon EOS Rebel XTi | Canon EFS 55-250 mm / f4-5.6 IS STM Lens
I was just granted the greatest photographic gift and the story of how it came to be is quite interesting... I've been lusting after an opportunity to shoot this Pterodactyl prehistoric like bird called the Pileated Woodpecker. It’s majestic, large, angular and color striking and I’ve always missed it by not having my camera around during inopportune times. I’ve not seen it since summer time and for some reason today, this morning of all mornings I was eating breakfast and really thinking about this bird. I just really wanted that bird to show up today. It was such a strong desire that randomly came on while eating and I even played through the entire scenario in my head.
I thought, “I’m eating and the bird fly’s in and perches on the suet feeder. I call up to Tiffany to bring my camera while I eye out my spot to shoot." And as soon as I finish my fantasy not seconds later The Pterodactyl swoops in and I scream with excitement, “THERE IT IS!!! IT CAME!!! TIFF CAN YOU BRING MY CAMERA DOWN!?” exactly like I had just thought it through in my head. It was as if I wished it into existence because I’ve not seen it for so long and here it came on the one day I randomly thought about it. I rapid fired my camera and caught as many as I could and this just made my month. It’s unlike any other bird around and I finally have it in my records. My problem is always that at such short notice I can't get my shutter speed fast enough to get a super clear shot of something moving and get enough light. I'm still learning how to do that with manual control. Next on the list is the Great Blue Heron that very slowly and methodically trolls up the creek in the back...
